The Bishop Mackenzie International Schools (BMIS) is an international, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from Reception (kindergarten) through Year 13 (grade 12) for pupils of all nationalities. The school year comprises 3 terms (trimesters) extending from mid-August to early December, from early January through late March, and early April to mid-June. Organization: The School operates as a not-for-profit trust under Malawi law, governed by a Board of Trustees elected from among the parents. Curriculum: The curriculum for students in Reception to Year 6 (PK-grade 5) follows the Primary Years Program (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB). Children are admitted to our Reception class (Pre-K) if they have reached the age of 4 years by 31st August of the year of entry and children are admitted to our year 1 class (K) if they have reached the age of 5 years by 31st August of the year of entry. Class teachers deliver cross curricular Units of Inquiry which address learning in literacy, math, science, and social studies. Specialist teachers work with these units to cover modern foreign languages, art, music, and physical education. Students follow the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in Years 7-11 (grades 6-10) and Years 12-13 (grades 11-12) follow the IB Diploma Program, which is externally examined in Year 13 (grade 12). An educational support program is in place to assist students with mild to moderate learning problems or students who need assistance with English-as-an-additional language. Student admission and placement is dependent on prior school records and reports, along with an assessment on entry to the school in order to match the studentÍs need to the school program. BMIS is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). Staff/Faculty: In the 2015-16 school year, there are 65 faculty members, including 12 U.S. citizens, 2-host country national and 51 other-country nationals, largely from UK and South Africa. Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, enrollment was 674, including 57 U.S. citizens, 198 host-country nationals, and 419 third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 49 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, and 8 were dependents of private U.S. citizens. Facilities: The School occupies a 25-acre site on the southwestern edge of LilongweÍs Area 3, a settled area of suburban housing. In the primary school, there are 21 teacher-based classrooms and rooms for art, music, and ICT. In the secondary section, special facilities include 21 teacher classrooms, 3 fully equipped laboratories and 2 ICT laboratories. The library is shared, as are the sports fields and gardens. Hard play areas include 2 tennis courts and a basketball court. An assembly hall doubles as a sports hall. A swimming pool complex comprises a 25-meter pool, an l8-meter pool, and an infant splash pool.
